View a collection of altered books created by intergenerational community members, facilitated by Jim Jacobmeyer. This exhibit will be on display December through February.
Jim Jacobmeyer is a local artist, teacher, and community organizer. He has taught Visual Art, K-College, for 50 years. He is a mixed media artist creating 2 and 3 dimensional artwork from found and recycled materials. Altered books are a way of combining writing, drawing, painting, print-making, collage and sculpture into one work of art. It is a very personal collection of ideas, feelings and emotions that opens one to a world of imagination. He believes that Altered Books or “Junk Journals” are a wonderful way to explore your own special unique identity.
Altered books are a form of mixed media art that involves transforming a book into a new work of art by changing its appearance or meaning. Artists can use a variety of techniques, such as cutting, tearing, folding, adding color, painting, and embedding objects.
This project began as a part of the Grant Wood Area Education Agency's College for Kids summer programming. Jim then extended workshop offerings to the general public. This exhibition is a culmination of work produced over the last year.
Books for this project were generously donated by the Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library.
