Join us for an active music-making class with Carly Schieffer of Orchestra Iowa's Music Together as participants are guided through the story through creative movement.
In 1892 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the music to the Nutcracker ballet, and the world has been mesmerized ever since. An overview of the story will be shared through children’s literature.
Carly currently serves as adjunct faculty at Mount Mercy University where she teaches undergraduate music education methods courses to both majors and non-majors and supervises student teachers, serves as the conference chair for the Iowa Music Educators professional development conference, maintains a private music studio, leads early childhood music classes, and teaches recertification courses for area education agencies. Prior to these appointments she taught elementary general music for nine years in a variety of school settings including overseas. She received a Bachelor’s of Music Education from Iowa State University and a Master of Arts in Music Education with a Kodály emphasis at the University of St. Thomas. She holds a mastery certificate in Kodály and has also taken courses in Dalcroze, Orff Level I, and Music Together. She has served as the past president of Kodály Educators of Iowa. Carly and her husband, Michael, have one son (Silas), two daughters (Mary Grace and Phoebe), and are licensed foster parents.
Her singers have been selected to numerous district, state, regional, and national choirs including the ICDA Opus Honor Choir, ACDA Regional Honor Choir, MKMEA Regional Honor Choir, and OAKE National Honor Choir.
As a performing musician, Carly has played with the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band (2021-22), sung with Chorale Midwest (2009-14), performed in Music Man in Concert (2013), Rodgers & Hammerstein in Concert (2015), and the Sound of Music (2022) with Theatre Cedar Rapids, performed in Titanic for Revival Theatre Company (2022), was a singer/dancer for Follies (2016), and was in Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre’s Carmen (2014). In addition, she played in her church’s orchestra (2009-2017) and currently sings on a worship team.

The Ladd Library is located at 3750 Williams Blvd SW and is a 16,000 square foot facility. It features one community room with space for up to 50 people, which can be utilized for meetings and special events. The Ladd Library has a wonderful collection of materials, public computers, a children's library, and space to sit and read or tables to work or gather.
