Every second Wednesday, September through November we'll meet via Zoom for a book discussion targeting a different age demographic.
Studies show that even babies recognize differences in skin color and hair textures, says Rebecca Bigler, Ph. D., an associate professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, who has studied children's racial attitudes (Parents.com).
The September session addresses how parents can expose their children to diverse work and offers resources for interacting with babies and children at multiple ages and stages of their development. The book, Hair Love will be discussed and the first 15 signups will receive a free copy of the book. If you receive a free copy, you can either pick it up as a hold or via curbside pick-up. You will be notified when your copy is available. Other copies may be available for checkout. Once signed up, all participants will receive a Zoom link prior to the program. Recordings will be archived on the Cedar Rapids Public Library YouTube Channel.
This program is perfect for parents, caregivers, college students, and anyone who is interested in exposing babies and children to diverse materials.
As part of a larger Read Woke initiative, these book discussions will connect you to resources and services. You are also welcome to bring your own titles to share with the community.
